Fostering industry links at Lancaster Medical School | IN-PART

Fostering industry links at Lancaster Medical School

Lancaster Medical School (LMS) was established in 2006 and educates over 120 medical students each year. Based in the North West, LMS has a growing reputation for excellent collaborations with industry and partners and is 1st in the UK for research intensity in medicine and 1st in the UK for research quality in medicine.

Collaboration between industry and non-academic partners is a priority for the University sector, which needs to demonstrate the impact of its research and academic activity. This impact can be in the form of policy change, new jobs, new businesses, partnerships, education and training etc.

The Director of Engagement at Lancaster Medical School, Dr Luigi Sedda, invited IN-PART to speak with academic colleagues as part of LMS’ seminar series on industry engagement. The seminar introduced IN-PART platforms to attendees. A web-based platform that can enable and manage collaborative activity, such as IN-PART has great value to the engagement team at LMS. The ability to report and track progress is also vital when evidencing the work being undertaken.

What IN-PART provides to academia is unique in the UK landscape and it is a straightforward process to get involved. In my role of Director of Engagement for Lancaster Medical School, I see IN-PART as a great opportunity to encourage more academics to get involved in engagement and research with non-academic partners.”

Callum Turner, one of IN-PART’s Academic Liaison Officers, delivered a presentation and demonstration of the IN-PART platforms. The seminar was well received and there was interest in how IN-PART can facilitate academia-industry partnerships from a number of people from the faculty.

We had representatives of the three divisions of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, which shows a broad interest in being involved to work with industry and third sector partners. Some of my colleagues will love to see more of these opportunities coming in the future.”

The seminar also involved 1-2-1 meetings with academics who wanted to know more about the Discover platform.

Callum was enthusiastic about this initiative, supportive and happy to help our staff during and post-event.”

Following this seminar, the number of submissions to Discover campaigns from Lancaster University has doubled.
